About visual PDF comparison
A visual comparison renders each page of both documents to a bitmap at matching dimensions, then compares them pixel by pixel with a small perceptual tolerance so that anti-aliasing differences do not register as changes. What it catches is everything a text diff misses: a logo swapped, an image moved, a colour changed, a table re-ruled, a font substituted, a signature block shifted. It is also the only method available for scanned documents, which have no text to compare. Its central weakness is worth understanding first: pixel comparison has no idea that content can move for innocent reasons. Insert one word on page two and every line below it shifts down, so from there on every page differs pixel-wise while reading identically. That is why the report gives you a difference percentage per page rather than a verdict — a page with two per cent changed pixels in one region is a real edit, while a page showing thirty per cent uniformly shifted is reflow.
How to visual PDF comparison
- 01
Add both documents
Add the original and the revision. Pages are matched by number.
- 02
Render and compare
Both files are rasterised locally and compared page by page. This is slower than a text diff.
- 03
Read the per-page percentages
Small localised percentages point to real edits; large uniform ones usually mean everything shifted.
- 04
Inspect the flagged pages
Open the pages that differ and confirm what actually changed before acting on it.
What this tool does
- Catches formatting, colour, image and layout changes that text comparison cannot see
- Works on scanned documents with no text layer at all
- Perceptual tolerance so anti-aliasing noise is not reported as difference
- Per-page difference percentages rather than a single opaque pass or fail
- Rendering and comparison both happen locally, on both files
Limitations worth knowing
Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.
- Reflow is reported as difference: one inserted word early on can make every later page differ.
- Slower and more memory-intensive than a text diff, because every page of both files must be rasterised.
- Documents with different page counts or page sizes compare poorly, since pages are matched by number and dimension.
- It tells you that pixels differ, not what the change means — interpretation is still yours.
How your file is handled
This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.
Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.
Questions about visual PDF comparison
When is visual comparison the right choice?
When appearance is what is under review — brand material, typeset layouts, forms — or when the documents are scans and there is no text to compare.
Every page is flagged. What now?
That is the classic reflow result. Switch to a text comparison to find the actual content edit, then come back to visual mode only for the specific pages where styling is in question.
Why is it so much slower?
Both documents have to be fully rendered to bitmaps before a single pixel can be compared. A text diff only needs the text layer, which is a fraction of the work.
Can it compare two scans of the same page?
Yes, and it is the only method that can — but expect noise. Scanner skew, brightness variation and dust differ between scans and register as pixel differences.
