About PDF to word

A PDF to Word conversion is useful when you need editable text, but this tool does not reproduce the original document’s appearance. It reads the PDF’s text layer and uses glyph positions to group text into lines, sorting from top to bottom and left to right. Large vertical gaps become paragraph boundaries, and adjacent body lines are joined into flowing paragraphs. This is a heuristic reconstruction: text from different columns can be combined, spacing can change, and some line-ending hyphens are removed before lowercase continuations. If heading inference is enabled, short lines separated from surrounding text are assigned Heading 1–4 styles using numbering, capitalisation and punctuation, not their font size or weight. Tagged PDFs can contain structural information, but this conversion does not use those tags to recover the original paragraphs, tables or heading hierarchy. It also does not transfer source fonts, bold or italic, images or table grids; the bold-and-italic control currently has no effect. The result is a genuine .docx package with editable text and the converter’s own document styles. Simple single-column documents are the most suitable starting point, but review the wording, order, paragraph joins and headings before relying on the output. If no selected page has extractable text, conversion stops with a no-text-layer error. For scanned text, run OCR PDF first and check the OCR result before converting.

How to PDF to word

  1. 01

    Add the PDF

Drop in the document. Everything happens in this tab, which matters for contracts and personnel files.

  2. 02

    Choose pages and heading inference

Select the pages to convert and decide whether to infer heading styles from text patterns. The bold-and-italic setting currently has no effect.

  3. 03

    Convert

Text runs are grouped into paragraphs and written into a real .docx package.

  4. 04

    Open and fix up

Download and open the .docx in a Word-compatible editor. Check the words, reading order, paragraph joins and headings, then rebuild any layout you need.

What this tool does

  • Produces a genuine .docx package for editing in Word-compatible applications
  • Fully editable text, not a picture of the page pasted into a document
  • Optional Heading 1–4 styles inferred from text patterns, with outline levels for navigation
  • Joins adjacent body lines into editable paragraphs, removing some line-ending hyphens
  • Text extraction and .docx packaging run on your device, without uploading the document for conversion

Limitations worth knowing

Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.

  • This is a text reconstruction, not a visual clone. Text from multiple columns can be combined, and paragraph joining or hyphen removal can change the wording. Review the output; images, table grids and the original page layout are not reproduced.
  • Tables are not rebuilt as Word tables. Text from cells is processed as ordinary lines and paragraphs, so row and column relationships can be lost rather than preserved as a tab-separated grid.
  • Source fonts, bold and italic are not transferred. The document uses the converter’s own styles, and the bold-and-italic control currently has no effect. Line wrapping and pagination can differ from the PDF.
  • For a plain-text file rather than a Word document, use PDF to Text, but still check the extraction. If all selected pages lack extractable text, this tool reports a no-text-layer error instead of creating an empty document. Scanned text needs OCR first; pages without extractable text in a mixed document contribute no text and trigger a warning.

How your file is handled

This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.

Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.

Questions about PDF to word

Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?

No. The output contains reconstructed, editable paragraphs rather than a page-for-page copy. Text positions guide extraction, but the original layout, fonts, images and table grids are not reproduced. Review both the text and its structure before using the document.

Why did my table come out as loose lines of text?

This converter does not build table rows or cells. It groups positioned text into lines and joins those lines into paragraphs, so text from different cells can be combined. Even when a PDF contains table tags, this conversion does not use them to recreate a Word table. Rebuild the table manually if you need its structure.

Which documents are the best fit?

Simple single-column reports, letters and articles with a usable text layer are the most suitable starting point. Their text becomes editable, and some headings can be inferred from text patterns. Source emphasis is not retained, and even simple documents need a check for missing characters, reading order, paragraph joins and hyphen changes. Columns, forms and table-heavy pages need more reconstruction.

I only need the text. Should I use this?

Use PDF to Text if you want a plain-text download instead of an editable Word package. It avoids this tool’s Word paragraph and heading reconstruction, but text extraction can still change spacing or reading order, so check the result.

Is my document uploaded to convert it?

No. The PDF is read and the .docx is packaged in your browser. Your document is not uploaded to a server for this conversion.
