About draft stamp PDF
The problem a draft stamp solves is not security, it is version confusion. An unmarked draft circulated for comment gets forwarded, printed, filed and eventually acted upon as though it were approved — a failure mode that costs real money in construction, law and procurement, where working from a superseded revision has consequences. A stamp makes the status unmistakable on every printed page and in every screenshot, so the document carries its own context wherever it travels. This preset fixes the text to DRAFT and defaults to diagonal placement at slightly higher opacity than a general watermark, because being noticed is the entire function. Only presentation is adjustable; the wording is locked so that a stamp reading "Draft" or "DRAFT COPY" does not appear alongside "DRAFT" across a set of documents that should look consistent. Keep your unstamped original: the intended workflow is to stamp the copy you circulate, not the file you continue editing.
How to draft stamp PDF
- 01
Load the working version
Stamp the copy you are about to circulate, not your editing master.
- 02
Pick placement and strength
Diagonal at 30% suits most documents. Raise the opacity if the page background is busy.
- 03
Stamp and circulate
Download the stamped copy and send that. Keep the clean original for continued work.
- 04
Replace, do not unstamp
When the document is approved, issue the clean final version rather than trying to remove the stamp.
What this tool does
- Wording locked to DRAFT, keeping a document set visually consistent
- Higher default opacity than a general watermark, because visibility is the purpose
- Diagonal default that reads as provisional at a glance, on screen and in print
- Applies to every page, so a single forwarded page still carries its status
- Runs locally, so an unapproved internal draft is never uploaded anywhere
Limitations worth knowing
Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.
- A stamp is a communication measure, not a control. It cannot stop anyone acting on a draft, only make the status obvious.
- The text is fixed to DRAFT by design. Use Add Watermark to PDF for any other wording.
- Removing the stamp later is not clean — always keep the unstamped original.
- On very dense pages the stamp will overlap content, which is an inherent consequence of marking a finished layout.
How your file is handled
This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.
Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.
Questions about draft stamp PDF
Why is the text fixed to DRAFT?
Consistency. Across a set of circulated documents, mixed wordings like Draft, DRAFT COPY and Draft v2 look careless and weaken the signal. This preset exists to produce one recognisable mark every time.
Can I remove the stamp once the document is approved?
Technically yes, but do not work that way. Stamp the circulated copy and keep your clean original, then issue that as the final. Unstamping a file risks leaving artefacts behind.
Does a draft stamp stop someone using the document as final?
No. It removes the excuse rather than the possibility. A reader is free to disregard it, and editing software will strip it out in seconds. Its value is that the status is visible at a glance.
Why is the default opacity higher than on the general watermark tool?
Because the failure mode differs. A confidentiality mark needs to be present without obstructing reading; a draft stamp is useless if a reader does not register it, so it errs toward visibility.
