About extract first page

The first page is structurally ordinary but informationally special: it is where covers, invoice summaries, title sheets and letterheads live, so it is the page most often needed on its own. Extracting it creates a new document containing a copy of that single page object plus only the resources it references, which is why a one-page extract from a 300-page report is usually a few kilobytes rather than a proportional slice. That small size is the practical point — a cover page can be emailed, used as a preview or attached to a ticket where the full document would be unwelcome. The page keeps its own dimensions and its /Rotate value, so a landscape title sheet stays landscape. Note that page one means the first page in the file, which is not always the page printed with the number 1.

What this tool does

  • Zero configuration — page one is selected automatically
  • Output carries only the resources that page uses, so it is typically tiny
  • Original page size and rotation are preserved
  • Lossless, so a scanned cover keeps its full image quality

Limitations worth knowing

Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.

  • The first page in the file is not necessarily the page labelled 1; documents with an unnumbered cover offset the whole sequence.
  • A cover that is drawn partly from a shared background image still carries that image, so the extract is not always small.
  • Document-level bookmarks are not copied into the output. Internal links to omitted pages may no longer work; external links are not intentionally removed.

How your file is handled

This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.

Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.

Questions about extract first page

Is the first page in the file always the page numbered 1?

No. Printed numbering is content drawn onto the page, and documents often begin with an unnumbered cover or roman-numeral front matter. This tool takes the physically first page.

Why is the extracted page so small?

Only the fonts, images and colour spaces the page actually references are copied. Everything used exclusively by later pages is left behind, which typically means a tiny file.

Can I extract the first few pages instead of just one?

Use Extract PDF Pages with a range such as 1-3. This page is the one-click case for a single cover sheet.
