About convert PDF to A4

A4 is 210 by 297 millimetres, or 595 by 842 points in PDF coordinates, and it is the paper almost every printer outside North America expects. The usual reason to convert is a document authored on US Letter: Letter is about 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter than A4, a difference small enough that print drivers quietly rescale it and large enough that the result has visibly wrong margins and drifting footers. Converting properly creates genuine A4 pages and draws each source page onto one as an embedded form object with a proportional scale factor. Because A4 is relatively tall and narrow, a Letter page scaled to fit is limited by width and leaves a little extra space at the bottom rather than cropping anything. The aspect ratio of A4 is 1:√2, which is also why A4 content maps neatly onto A3 or A5 with no leftover bands.

What this tool does

  • True A4 pages at 595 × 842 points, not a print-time scaling hint
  • Proportional scaling, so Letter content fits by width without cropping
  • Per-page orientation is respected, keeping landscape pages landscape
  • Vector content stays vector — text remains selectable after conversion

Limitations worth knowing

Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.

  • Letter and A4 have different aspect ratios, so a converted Letter page has slightly more space at the bottom than at the sides.
  • Content is scaled as a whole rather than reflowed, so a dense Letter page becomes marginally smaller print on A4.
  • Centre mode can clip content, since A4 is narrower than Letter.
  • Form fields and annotations may not track the transform; flatten interactive forms first.

How your file is handled

This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.

Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.

Questions about convert PDF to A4

Why is there extra space at the bottom after converting from Letter?

A4 is taller and narrower than Letter. Fitting proportionally means the width is the limiting dimension, so the scaled content ends slightly short of the bottom edge rather than being cropped.

Is this different from choosing “fit to A4” when printing?

Yes. A print dialog scales at output time and the file itself is unchanged, so the next person sees the original size. This rewrites each page's media box to A4 permanently.

Will converting to A4 make the text smaller?

From Letter the reduction is around 4% by width, which is essentially imperceptible. Converting from a much larger size such as A3 shrinks text considerably more.
