About rotate PDF

Rotation in a PDF is not a transformation of page content. Each page object may carry a /Rotate entry holding 0, 90, 180 or 270, and a viewer turns the page by that many degrees clockwise when it displays or prints it. This tool writes that entry without moving pixels or rewriting content streams, so rotation does not reduce page-content quality. The whole file must still be loaded and saved, so time and memory use depend on document size and device capacity. It also explains a common confusion. Turning a page with the view controls in Acrobat or a browser viewer is usually a temporary display setting that is not saved, so the file still opens sideways for the next person. Writing /Rotate makes the change part of the document. Values are normalised into the legal set, so applying 90 to a page already at 270 yields 0 rather than an invalid 360.

How to rotate PDF

  1. 01

    Load the PDF

Drop in the document with pages facing the wrong way.

  2. 02

    Pick a direction

Choose 90 degrees for a page lying on its side, 180 for upside down, or 270 for the opposite side.

  3. 03

    Choose the pages

Leave the page field empty to rotate the whole document, or list only the pages that are wrong.

  4. 04

    Rotate and save

Press Rotate PDF and download. The rotation is stored in the file itself.

What this tool does

  • Rotation is written into the document, so it persists for every reader
  • Rotate all pages or only the ones that need it
  • Lossless page-content rotation without pixel re-encoding; processing time and memory use depend on the document and device
  • Angles are normalised, so repeated rotations never produce an invalid value
  • Mixed existing rotations are handled per page rather than being reset

Limitations worth knowing

Every PDF tool has constraints. Stating them plainly is more useful than discovering them halfway through your work.

  • Only right-angle rotations are possible. A scan that is skewed by a few degrees needs a deskew tool, not rotation.
  • Rotation changes the displayed orientation but not the underlying media box dimensions, so some layout tools still report the original width and height.
  • Stamped text or numbering added earlier rotates with the page, since it lives in the same content stream.
  • Rotating a signed document invalidates its signature.

How your file is handled

This tool runs entirely inside this browser tab. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your own disk and hands the bytes to JavaScript running on this page — no network request carries your document anywhere. You can confirm that yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network panel, and run the tool. You will see no upload.

Nothing is stored after the fact. Closing or reloading this tab discards the file, the result and everything derived from them, because none of it ever left your machine. Read how local processing works.

Questions about rotate PDF

Why did my earlier rotation not stick?

Viewer rotate buttons usually change only the on-screen view, not the file. This tool writes the /Rotate entry into each page object, so the orientation is part of the saved document.

Does rotating reduce image quality?

No. Rotation is a single number stored on the page; content streams and image data are copied untouched. You can rotate as many times as you like with no degradation.

Which angle turns a sideways page upright?

If the text reads bottom-to-top, use 90 degrees clockwise. If it reads top-to-bottom, use 270. If it is upside down, use 180. Trying one and re-running costs nothing.

Can I fix a slightly crooked scan?

No. This tool changes /Rotate, which is restricted to multiples of 90 degrees. Correcting a two-degree tilt requires a separate deskew operation that transforms the page content or image.
